Tony Johnson ‘09
Hi, I’m Tony Johnson, a junior here at Concordia. I graduated from Anaconda High School in Anaconda, Mont. I am a studio art major with Spanish and theatre minors.
I chose Concordia for a number of reasons. First, I really wanted to study Spanish and I understood that they had an excellent Spanish program. Then when I toured the campus, twice, I felt like I could live here. Although I was looking at an art school in Minneapolis, Concordia seemed to just have a special fit for me. I knew Concordia had an art program that would probably not be as intense as the art school, and here I knew I could do other things I love.
Since I’ve been at Concordia, this has proven true and there are more opportunities here than there ever would’ve been in Minneapolis. Here I got a job at the Rourke Art Gallery and Museum. Through the theatre, I get to learn many ways in which I can apply my art major to real life. I also work as a theatre assistant in the costume studio on campus and help with other creative projects in the theatre.
Although I came to Concordia for Spanish, I knew that I wanted to go into art. Concordia provides numerous activities to help figure out what you want to do, but once you’ve chosen a major, faculty will show you ways to apply it. One example that I’m aware of is last year the public relations majors got together with the theatre’s directing class and did the PR for them. It taught them a lot about how the system works and they got lots of practice.
I have recently been cast in the role of Antipholus of Ephesus for the Shakespeare play “The Comedy of Errors,” which opens in late March, so I spend most of my time at rehearsal. I also spend a lot of my time doing homework and working. When I do get free time I use it to hang out with friends, watch TV, play video games and listen to music.
