Lefse on Ice
There is something about going to college in Minnesota that makes you want to play hockey or at least watch it. Sure, I like to skate. I even have my own skates and hockey stick.
My friends and I have played some pick up hockey games at the local outdoor rink. Although I enjoy skating and playing hockey, watching it is a lot more entertaining
Last weekend I went to the Concordia Men’s Hockey game. The games are played at the Moorhead Sports Arena next to Moorhead High School. The short drive is well worth the fun that follows at the game. The Cobbers hosted the Oles from St. Olaf. Last’s years defending MIAC champs drove a long way to face the Cobbers. Saturday’s game proved to be an exciting match-up.
The “Lefse on Ice” game began with St. Olaf scoring a few goals early. Going into the third period, St. Olaf was leading 4 to 0. The Cobbers rallied back and scored three goals with about 6 minutes left in the game. The fans whipped into a frenzy after the third goal. The last five minutes were intense, with the Cobbers nearly tying the game several times. Like all good Scandinavian hockey, there were a few scuffles as well. Unfortunately, the Cobbers could not score again, and the Oles won 4 to 3.
Hockey games are fun to watch, especially when you are cheering in the Cobber student section. The Cobber crazies came out for the game as well. I am a part of a group of guys called the Cobber Nation. (A few of them are in the picture) We go to a lot of sporting events usually decked out in Cobber gear and sometimes with our chests painted saying, “GO COBBERS!” We try to get the crowd pumped up for the games by leading cheers and chants. This semester we are raising money for Relay for Life to support the American Cancer Society. More to come about Cobber Nation and Relay for Life later.
