Kangaroo Court
Last Friday I woke up as usual. Got up, turned on the bathroom’s radio and took my shower. Little did I know that my weekend would change so dramatically from listening to one radio station.
When I turned the radio on, it was already on a morning talk show. Since I wanted to listen to music, I attempted to change the radio to a station that I usually listen to. The radio had a dial tuner, so I thought I had the right radio station. It was playing a happy song about a kangaroo, so naturally I left it because I thought it was funny.
After the song ended, it started back up again. I thought either this was the coolest mistake ever, or the song just had a long pause in it. Then the long pause returned. It became apparent to me that this song was purposely being played repeatedly. It was a cool enough song that it was a pretty exciting realization.
As Friday continued, I learned how I wasn’t the only person to discover the kangaroo song station. When I went to work in the costume studio, we tuned into the station and listened to it straight for about three hours.
During the weekend it was on continuously still. Listeners by then were just discovering the kangaroo song, or knew most of the lyrics. We also knew that the reason for the consistently playing kangaroo song was to take care of the station’s listeners while the station set up a new radio station.
What this station was going to be was a mystery. Along with what music it played, no one knew what they’d be called either. The only commercials in between songs was test runs of names for it. Some good ones I heard were “95, the disease” and “95, the Anaconda.”
On Monday at 6am I was up and sitting near my radio listening to the last run through of the kangaroo song. Then they announced its new name, “Bob 95.” How creative! Then they started to play the music. It was a country station. I kept waiting to see if they would have a combination of music like country, pop, classical and the many other types of music. But no, it was only country.
Later Monday I got to help promote the station by dressing up in a moose suit and waving signs around as cars drove by. Thanks to the kangaroo song, my weekend wasn’t just good, it was amazing.
