“OH MY GOSH, SEAN CONNERY BUMPED INTO ME!!!”
While most people were heading home over Easter break, my friend Jesse Martin and I decided to go on an adventure in New York City.
We were only there for three days because we are good college students and didn’t want to miss any class. Three days might not sound like a long time, but we fit a lot of things in.
We went to two shows and bumped into Sean Connery, trekked to the top of the Empire State Building during the windstorm of the millennium, and spent hours in Times Square.
I could go on for years about the 2 hour line up the Empire State Building and the bustling crossroads that is Times Square, but I’m going to tell you about the shows we saw!
Having never seen a Broadway show before, I really wanted to see a fun musical and a powerful dramatic play. For our fun musical we went to Legally Blonde: The Musical and it was so fantastic! There were songs about Ireland, the bend and snap, and being blonde; it was a laugh riot and richly designed.
The play that we went to see was called Frost Nixon. It was a tense historical drama about the series of television interviews where Richard Nixon admitted and apologized for his role in the Watergate scandal. You could cut the tension in the theater with a knife during the dramatized interviews.
It was a stunning show, but the real kicker was what film star was sitting four rows in front of me. That’s it was the original James Bond himself, Sean Connery!!!
I saw him come down the aisle and was like, “Oh my gosh Jesse, that’s Sean Connery!” When the play ended, I hoped to procrastinate enough so that I could bump into him in the aisle and say “Excuse me,” and he would say something Scottish back.
Sadly, the plan didn’t work out. I procrastinated enough in the aisle, but I stepped one second too soon and he ran into me, and it was awkward because I hadn’t plan what to do there!
Anyway, he bumped into me and I froze in embarrassment. But I do get to say I heard him speak to someone and that he touched my back! Seriously, how many people can say Sean Connery touched their back?!?
After a rousing 80 some hours in the city, what did I learn from this trip? I love Broadway, I freeze around famous people, and I don’t photograph well in the wind!
