Relay for Life

Cobber Nation at Relay for LifeAt 4:30 am about 60 tired people gathered to celebrate the accomplishments of a successful event. This was the closing ceremony to Relay for Life, an event sponsored by Concordia for Moorhead Colleges to raise money and awareness for the American Cancer Society. It was a great event for a great cause and we had a ton of fun too.

The festivities began the previous afternoon with dinner and entertainment. A band from Boston was the first to take the stage. Although the crowd had not completely gathered yet, the band rocked out with funky guitar licks and energetic melodies. More people started to show up and claim their “campsites.” The opening ceremony officially kicked off the event. Participants got to meet cancer survivors and hear the mission of Relay for Life. All of the teams (over 40) lined up on the track and the survivors led the first lap.

The goal of Relay for Life is for teams to work together to raise money for the American Cancer Society. During the Relay, at least one member from each team walks around the track all night. The Cobber Nation guys made a team. We raised money by going to hockey games and asking for donations. We also did a “chuck a puck” contest. People could buy a puck for a dollar and throw it on the ice between a period. The closest to the center won a prize.

The Cobber Nation guys had a good time together at Relay walking together, tossing the football, jamming to music and hanging out with friends. I even got to be in a pie eating contest. Other festivities included bands, trivia, scavenger hunts, fear factor contests and fun games at different teams’ campsites. Even though I didn’t go to sleep until 5 am the next morning it was a great event. Relay is a symbol of hope for people battling with cancer and an encouragement to family and friends. Check out a Relay for Life near you and start walking for a cure.
