Graduation vs. Registration: the major life transition

img_1039.jpgIn case we haven’t met, I’m Megan Kummet an incoming freshman at Concordia. (Nice to meet you) I will begin with a graduation re-cap to refresh the memory of those who could argue: “it’s been awhile…” Everyone looked sharp in their blue caps and gowns as we marched down to the Brainerd High School field on what couldn’t have been a more perfect day. The stands were packed with loved ones and everything seemed different yet the same. We have the same usual speakers: the class president, the valedictorian (who will be attending Yale), and a third speaker who spoke about “the game of LIFE”. Then we changed thing up a bit, by having a surprise performance of members from the senior class singing the theme for this year’s grad blast and the newly appointed class song: Sweet Caroline by Neil Diamond. This performance was so moving for some of us that well………we kind of started a mosh pit. The beach balls and balloons went crazy and when we hit the chorus the circle of students would swarm in and create yet another mosh pit. Needless to say a lot of parents we’re pretty confused, but to the senior class, we went out in style.

Grad blast was also pretty amazing. There was food and money everywhere, what more could you ask for! The hypnotist was definitely a highlight to see our classmates acting so strange and controlled. We were finally released at 5 am and all crashed until about 3pm the next day. Bonfires and grad parties have followed every weekend and keep me really busy! I’m also getting excited for my graduation party (it’s not until next Sunday)

Yesterday I was also on campus for my registration. My mom and I drove into town the night before so that we didn’t have to leave home so early. I was put into my orientation group and we did a few icebreakers and got to know each other a little better. We continued attending various sessions about life in the residence halls, asking questions to current students, getting our ID pictures taken, and FINALLY registration for classes. It was a little overwhelming at first seeing so many new faces, but being able to recognize some really helped. Overall the registration process was very helpful and exciting, and I am only sad about one thing. Classes start August 30th, which is also my 19th birthday. Nonetheless, I am optimistic.
