Don’t You (Forget About Me)

Me, Corn.Hey, old pal. It’s been awhile since I’ve seen you. Have you done something new with your hair? It looks really good. Not that it doesn’t always look good, it just looks like it’s got some extra bounce. A little more OOMPH, you know? Did you switch conditioners? Add some spray pomade? See, I told you. Once you go spray pomade, you never go back.

Me? Oh, I’ve been keeping busy. The big Cobber Corn Feeds were a couple weeks back. Yes, it was my first corn feed ever. We don’t seem to have them in Brainerd, for whatever reason, and 2 hours just never seemed worth the drive for some free corn. But boy, it sure was worth walking the two blocks for! AND there wasn’t just corn and thousands of fellow Cobbers hanging out and shooting the breeze, there was music and inflatable games and balloon animals and big ol’ horses. The roommates and I took a spin on an old fashioned carriage ride, and I won a pen for knowing my Cobber trivia. Why are we called Cobbers? Because our school was built in a corn field, fool! When it was all said and done, the theatre courtyard didn’t know what hit it. Naturally, all that corn had to be shucked somewhere, and it was we Moorhead summer dwellers who did it the night before. It amazing how quickly we students were able to make it through all that corn, and just before the rain starting pouring down. Just doing our part for the Cobber community. It certainly got me excited for when everyone starts migrating back to campus over the next week.

This weekend? Actually, I headed home. Yeah, it’s been a long time. I’ve never really been homesick before, but I think that being away for so long has finally caught up to me. A pretty intense storm hit Brainerd last week, and it turns out we have enough trees down in our yard to supply us with firewood for the next three seasons. I never got around to learning how to work a chainsaw, what with all the socializing, shopping and eating of Mom’s food that I had to catch up on. I got to make it up to my old summer employment and chat with my old summer employers, and I also got to enjoy the company of a few of my old friends from high school. I took a day trip down to the MOA on Saturday, which was a cluster of hustle and bustle. I navigated my way through the crowds rather well. Sunday was my friend Scott’s cello recital, which was a real treat, since I don’t think I’ve heard him play since high school. You don’t know what you’re missing.

Well, it’s been nice chatting. Hopefully I’ll see you around soon. I’ve got one heck of a week coming up, what with the moving back onto campus on Wednesday, the Orientation training on Thursday, the CSC kick-off meeting Saturday and the big web relaunch next Monday. At least I finally got around to registering for fall classes. I guess it’s time to show senior year who’s boss.

Peace out.
