Kelly Nervick’s Birthday Fiesta as Experienced by Me!

Kelly Nervick, one of my fellow bloggers, is a very good friend of mine. Recently it was Kelly’s Birthday and I was lucky enough to get a VIP invite (Kelly asked me in person and not via Facebook!) to one of the hottest tickets in town!!! In the picture is Kelly’s friend Katie, Kelly Nervick the Birthday Girl, ME!, and our friend Joanna!

Kelly’s party at Chili’s was so much fun, but that night I realized something really cool about College. Unlike high school, you don’t just hang out with people in your own grade, you hang out with everyone.

In high school, the only way a sophomore talks to a senior is if they are super cool or hyper accomplished in an activity, but college is not like that. In any given class you can have a representative of every grade. Last year when I was a freshmen in my Spanish class, there were other freshmen, sophomores, juniors, seniors, and a super-senior. You can’t get a better distribution than that. When I walked into that class, I totally thought it was going to be really cliquey but it totally wasn’t. I had a study group with three senior girls and I was only a freshmen. College is really cool because your grade isn’t a label or status; it just exists for the sake of housing and registration.

At Kelly’s Birthday Party, Joanna (the lovely lady on my right) and I were the only sophomores there surrounded by Kelly’s senior friends who we didn’t know at all. Not that they would be jerky like this in a social setting, but our grade never even came up. In the end, Joanna and I didn’t feel awkward being the youngin’s that we were and we had a great time!
