The Adventures Of Grandmaster Flash On The Wheels of Steel
Alright everyone, lets take one big deep breath in together.
Whew. Doesn’t that feel better?
Okay, so maybe that was more for my benefit than yours, but I sure am feeling a bit like I might need to remind myself to breath every so often. It’s go-go-go-go time for ol’ Hannah, and boy, do my roommates miss me more than ever.
Most of my time as of late has been devoted to a gal named Frances Frazier Comstock – she’s the one who provided the funds for our esteemed theatre on campus. I’m currently memorizing two scripts, and assistant house managing for the musical. Here comes the breakdown:
We opened Two Gentlemen of Verona (The Rock Musical) last weekend, and it was absolutely nuts. Not only because it was my first time working on the house management team, but because the show is absolutely deliriously insane – in the best way possible. After watching the show for the 2nd time on Friday, I had several cast members tell me I should be planted in the audience every night because of my loud, distinct and boisterous laugh. Not only were the feature characters and the chorus incredible, the set and lights seemed to come from another planet (or at least another decade.) I even made sure to get funked out for the first night – check out my pants in the picture up top! (That’s all of us senior theatre kids – Jen, Liz, Jake, Matt, Me, Andrea, Marit and Laura)
Other than the musical, I got cast in Marit’s senior directing thesis show [sic]. I’m having an absolute blast doing it. I haven’t done a comedy since I’ve been here, and I’m thrilled to be working with Marit and my fellow cast members. I love doing Lab shows (I’ve done two in the past) with student directors because they feel more intimate for the audience, and its really gratifying to know that you’re not the only one growing through the experience – you get to help a fellow student! It’s really strange to be in a senior thesis knowing that I’m also a senior – I can remember thinking about how old the seniors were my freshman year. And now I’m one, and my friends are directing, and their names are in our planners, and it’s all very surreal. I just hope I can stop laughing in the middle of scenes before we open.
Finally, I also was cast in a scene by my friend/babooshka Michele for the Beginning Directing classes’ scene showcase. We’re doing a scene from Proof, which I hadn’t read until I was cast. I spent a night procrastinating from studying for a test and read the entire script in one sitting – it was absolutely gorgeous. It’s great working with Michele, and I love working with my scene partner – it’s her first time acting! I’m learning more everyday, and we are really cohesive as a group.
It might be taking a toll on my sleep cycle, but I think it’s been worth it so far. I’ll be sure to keep you updated.
