Start Me Up

Me and MayaThings I never thought would actually happen:
The Year 2008.

And now, here it is.
2008 is going to be a big year, not only for me, but my parents too. Not only will I be walking the line in May, but my younger brother will be graduating from high school as well. (Oh please, don’t tell me they didn’t plan that. They’ll be living the high life a year from now. The wall between my mine and my brother’s bedrooms will be knocked out to make room for a mini dance floor – complete with smoke machines, disco ball and jukebox. I’m no fool.) And actually, now that it’s here, it’s not so terrifying. It’ll be more comforting once I have an actual job lined up, but I feel if I made it this far, I’m well enough prepared for the next step.

It was SO nice being back in Brainerd for my break. I got to spend a lot of quality time with my best friends - it was the first time we were all back in town together since LAST Christmas break. But, we’ve been friends for so long now that it didn’t even feel like a day passed by between all of us. We got to do a good mixture of our old favorite routines like raiding my friend Kali’s mom’s elementary school teacher supplies for an arts and crafts night, and some new experiences like traveling to nearby Crosby with my friend Maya’s parents to try our hands at curling (That’s us in the photo). I also was able to hit the rink with my Dad a few times to watch my brother play a few hockey games (I can’t believe this is his last year as a Brainerd Warrior!)

It was strange coming back to campus though, as one of my roommates graduated in December (and, lucky for me and my other roommate, ResLife didn’t assign us a new one. Look who’s living the high life NOW, Mom and Dad!) as well as one of my good friends. Sarah, my roommate, is living back in the Twin Cities and working while Britta, my friend, is heading out to Los Angeles in a month to intern for William Shatner. (Yes, THE Captain Kirk.) I’ve only been back for 3 days now, but already campus life feels a little emptier without them.

Regardless, today was my last first day of classes. The only class I have on Monday, Wednesday and Friday is my Phy Ed credit which, as I found out today, is equal parts cardio and weight training. It’s a good thing most of my grade is based on attendance and attitude as opposed to, uh, skill. Showing up on time is something I CAN do. My Tuesday and Thursday’s are a little more packed, but I can handle it since my Phy Ed credit only lasts until Spring Break.

All in all, I’m ready to make this my best and last semester of my scholastic life. Go 2008!
