Dress You Up
Now that I’m well into the swing of my last semester of school, I’m able to pretty easily pinpoint what exactly I’m going to miss about this grand institution of higher learning. I think I’ve been ready to be finished with papers, and tests, and class in general for a good year now, but what I’m not sure about is how I’m going to leave my big ol’ mess of extra-curriculars behind. One of those I’m going to miss is the theatre.
I had a week off from the theatre this past week after the closing of [sic], my very last Lab Theatre show. We had a FANTASTIC three-day run, with good sized audiences every night that really seemed to enjoy the show. That picture you see up top is Brandon (our stage manager), Kris (“Theo”), me (“Babette”), Marit (our director), and Andrew (“Frank”).
I usually have a good healthy sense of stage fright before any performance but I was more so this time because we had changed so much of our blocking and transitions so shortly before opening night that there was a very real possibility everything could have just fallen apart on stage that night. But as soon as I got out there, and heard that first laugh, I was able to relax and have a ton of fun with my fellow cast mates. Our second night we had a few technical difficulties, mostly dealing with my doorknob falling off every time I shut my door – but we all apparently played it off well enough because most of the audience that night thought it was planned and HILARIOUS. Whew. And after the run, a cake baked by our superfans Corey and Kelly surprised us all. Hurrah!
Now that this show is over, I get to start working on my first and last speaking role on the Main stage, “Hannah” in The Night of the Iguana. I’m super excited about this, not only because it’ll be the first time I’ll get to act on an actual set, but because I get to work with my friend Matt again (we did a show together last year in the Lab theatre) and because I get to work with some other talented actors (and friends!) that I haven’t gotten to work with yet. It should be a fantastic end to my time in the theatre – even though there will probably be some tears at the last curtain call.
