Archive for February, 2008

This year just might have been the best Valentine’s ever: I was able to take a 9 hour train ride to Lons le Saunier, France to visit my sister for a week! Although the train rides were long and sometimes boring, the trip was really worth it once I made it to Lons. Anna teaches English in the primary schools in the area and has made some wonderful friends with those living in the town.

While in France I had so many new and exciting adventures it’s hard to describe the100_8434.JPGm all! The first day I was there Anna took me on a small tour of Lons and then to a chocolate shop. Talk about being in heaven! If you like chocolate, GO TO FRANCE! The chocolate melts on your tongue and they have all sorts of flavors imaginable. Honestly, you can’t eat just one, you want to eat the whole store! Needless to say, we bought some chocolate and then went to the grocery store across from Anna’s apartment, Ed. While there, I learned a big difference between France and Germany: the French take their time in lines at the check-out counter and buy most of their groceries all at once rather than coming back every other day. Such a difference from Germany where you are supposed to have your money ready and pack your groceries quickly so as to avoid getting run over. Okay, that was a bit over-exaggerated, but you get the point.

After Ed, Anna and I made an attempt to make a great American treat: Puppy chow! Of course, we ran into two problems:1. we didn’t have the right cereal, so we compromised and used some of Anna’s roommate’s health cereal that is like cornflakes and 2. we didn’t have very much powdered sugar. So we made the trek back over to Ed and waited in the long lines just to get powdered sugar. But it was well worth it. The Puppy chow tasted really good and lasted about the whole week! I was also able to experience the French version of American Idol, Star Academy that night. It was the final, so we stayed up to find out who won. (more…)

warm.jpgBrrr! Usually the end of February means the beginning of the Northern Minnesota thaw. It begins to warm up a little bit and the wind begins to cease its arctic chill. However, the past couple of weeks have been unusually cold and the wind hasn’t diminished one bit. Although I enjoy the beautiful pure white snow and crisp winter air, I am ready for a change. Fortunately for me and about 70 other Cobbers that I know, change isn’t too far off.

At about 11:00am this Saturday, February 23, 2008, the Concordia Choir will be headed out on a tour of the South. We have worked long and hard on our music and we are ready to hit the road and have some fun! Our first performance will take place in Benson Great Hall at Bethel University. From there we will continue to head south to the following:

Des Moines, Iowa

Normal, Illinois

Manchester, Missouri

Bartlett, Tennessee – home to our very own Grant Vanderford

African extravaganza!

Planning an event is definitely no easy task. You keep planning for weeks and everything goes swell until the day before the actual event  and you realize you have nothing ready to go!! That’s what happened to me this past Friday when and I felt like everytafrican-extravaganza-059.JPGhing was going wrong and I had messed up big time. (more…)

SUPRISE!!!! with marshmallows

seankatie1.jpgLast Saturday, me and a bunch of our friends suprised the pants off of our good friend Katie Hedberg. Ok, well…we didn’t literally scare her pants off. That would have been embarassing for sure! It should be noted that Katie has never had a suprise party thrown for her before and we all knew that that is what she really wanted. So we planned and scheemed and facebook invited as mansmores2.jpgy people as we could think of to join us at the HuHot in Fargo for dinner. Myself and Sean Volk, the masterminds behind the whole thing, convinced Katie that we wanted to go to dinner with her and her boyfriend on Saturday night, which she quickly agreed to. Saturday eventually arrived and I had Katie pick me up at the mall where I was doing some tour shopping and getting very anxious and excited about Katie’s suprise. The car ride between the mall and HuHot was almost excruciating because I didn’t want to even hint as to what was about to come. We finally arrived at HuHot and raced inside to beat the cold. As soon as we stepped foot in the door, Katie immediately looked at the host and said “table for 5 please.” At that point my eyes were about as big as saucers and (more…)

Books. Very important you would think (and you are correct). We all try to mentally prepare ourselves for a swift kick in the pocket book upon our first semesters purchase, and as I like many others, stood in line for just some small things I watched other fellow freshman trying to adjust to the weight of the books. The pre-med majors better start hitting the gym I thought and also considered how the weight of my tiny summer’s work paycheck compared to the novels, guides, and texts that I would be trading it in for.034.JPG (more…)
