Even through tour ended almost 2 weeks ago, I still have so many stories to share. This, however, would take forever, so I will only share a few brief highlights. Since I have never been down south I was really excited to see where we would end up visiting on the way, or if we would always just drive straight to our concert location.

One of our first really exciting stops occurred in St. Louis, MO. After eating lunch at a rather fancy restaurant, several of us hopped onto the bus and headed over to see the St. Louis Arch. After waiting for a bit, we all piled into these tiny little tram cars and were whisked 630 feet up in the air to the top of the arch.

While milling around the top of the arch looking out over the city and river, we discovered that we were able to hear each other in the tram cars and sang “Plenty Good Room” on our way back down.

The following day before heading to the hometown of Grant Vanderford in Bartlett, TN, we stopped briefly in Memphis – thejon.jpg birthplace of rock and roll. Don’t get me wrong, I love choral music, but I have a rock ‘n’ roll heart! So we had about 45 minutes in downtown Memphis and we definitely made the best of it. While some people simply took a break and sipped on Starbucks, others of us traveled down Beale Street, and a few people even visited the Gibson factory.

I stopped in a shop right next to the B.B. King Company Store and B.B. King’s Blues Club and picked up a few things. What I really loved about Beale Street is that, just like Hollywood, they have famous peoples names engraved on golden eighth notes right on the sidewalks. The best part was yet to come. (more…)

What a weekend!

030.JPGWOW. Coming back from break was like a windstorm, of academics that is. Now all I can remember is a blur, my family and friends that occasionally received phone calls assumed that college had eaten me or I simply fell off the side of the planet.

Not so much as an e-mail, but they kept faith I guess. I love (no not really) coming back on Monday’s which are just jam packed regardless of the academic part being done by afternoon. The following days were about the same and the weekend following was about to be the same.

Luckily we did so much in class that week I got back that I had most of what there was for homework done early. So….I finally worked out the details and made my first trip to Concordia’s Language Villages. I had been planning on that weekend for awhile and it was an experience and a half. (more…)

100_8831.JPGYou wake up and clear your eyes. Stretch your legs and get out of bed; it’s a new day. You’re excited to be able to wear that new t-shirt you bought at H&M the other week since it is finally warm enough. Out of habit, you look out the window. It’s white. You rub your eyes again. It must be a dream!

Once more you look out the window. Nope, it’s really there: SNOW!! That’s what happened to me this morning. I got out of bed and found snow on the ground!! Not to worry, there wasn’t much and it’s not sticking, but this is about the second or third snowfall we’ve had and it’s not even really winter here anymore!

As my mom always says, “It snowed last night! It snowed last night! The snowbears had a pillow fight!” The only thing is, the snow bears are still having that pillow fight as it is still snowing….a little. I guess God just wanted to give me a reminder that I really do want to come home in July. :-)

The past couple of weeks here have been great. Time filled with lazing about, reading, watching movies, hiking, jogging and travelling to Weimar with friends. Not to mention finally finishing my paper and handing it in (what a stress-reliever!).

With this near two month break between semesters, I’ve had more time to experiment cooking things for dinner. Yummy American food one normally can’t get over here like sloppy joes. (more…)

Final Home Concert

choir.jpg

This has been my first and only year in the Concordia Choir, and I have loved every minute of it, especially on tour. In the course of a weekend and then 2 full weeks, we traveled to Bismarck, Jamestown, St. Paul, Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, Tennessee, Alabama, Louisiana, 3 places in Texas, and Kansas and sang in some really beautiful locations. 14 concerts in all.

We bonded as friends and as a choir through our time on the bus, through new experiences, and especially through our concerts. I could tell stories for hours, so I will simply have to save a few of the really good ones for other blogs.

The picture you see here is of me and my fellow seniors, decked out in our blue velvet Concordia Choir robes. This was taken just moments before we all proudly walked on stage at our home concert this past Sunday night. It was hard to believe that after a 2 week choir tour down south we were about to (more…)

Peace Prize Forum!

Last week Concordia College hosted the 20th Annual Nobel Peace Prize Forum on our campus.

The event is hosted alternating between five Norwegian Lutheran colleges of the upper Midwest including Concordia, St. Olaf, Luther, Augsburg and Augustana.

This year we had the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize laureate Dr. Mohammad Yunus gave the key note address. We also had Jeffrey Sachs and Greg Mortenson, both actively involved in making our planet a better place to live for all mankind.

Out of all the sessions we had, I really liked the world café where we got together with four people and discussed poverty and ways to alleviate poverty. Every session I went to was informative and gave me simple advice on how to cautiously view the world around me and how to give equal opportunity to all people.

I met people from all the other colleges and from around Minnesota. I also met with Dr. Yunus. I was so excited to meet him that somehow I lost my train of thought…and managed to look like a complete idiot and felt like one too! (more…)
