Medical school updates
I decided I need to know more about medical school before I decide to pursue a career in medicine. I am sophomore and I still don’t know enough about how the MCAT’s work. So last night I started doing some research about schools, rating, programs and just some basic information. I found the Association of American Medical colleges (AAMC) and found a list of about 129 schools across the country.
As I started to look through them, I realized how much I would miss Concordia College for several reasons.
The most important reason is that I will be far away from my parents and won’t have a free place to live and no free FOOD! I also wondered if I would ever miss the Moorhead winters but realized that I would NEVER ever go through that phase of missing winters here. I would however miss the people; my church and going back home every night to see my annoying 12 year sister watching ‘HANNAH MONTANA’!
I also talked a graduating senior with a bio and chemistry major, just like me. She got into the medical school in Oregon and was really excited about that. We talked about MCAT score being out of 45 points and you were good to go if you scored about a 30 and in great shape if you got a 35! Now that sounded a lot like my ACTs to me and I don’t remember enjoying huge exams like. We also talked about the cost to just apply to medical schools. She told me she spent close to $4,000 applying and visiting the schools that she got called back from.
To all of you prospective students thinking about going into medicine, I would highly recommend shadowing your physician just to see what’s it like to be a doctor. I would also suggest start looking into medicine’s pros and cons and make sure that it something you really want to do. The AAMC is a great resource: http://www.aamc.org/
Check it out and find out more. If you have questions call people and ask them. Like my dad always says, “Better late than never”!
