Don’t You (Forget About Me)

Me, Corn.Hey, old pal. It’s been awhile since I’ve seen you. Have you done something new with your hair? It looks really good. Not that it doesn’t always look good, it just looks like it’s got some extra bounce. A little more OOMPH, you know? Did you switch conditioners? Add some spray pomade? See, I told you. Once you go spray pomade, you never go back.

Me? Oh, I’ve been keeping busy. The big Cobber Corn Feeds were a couple weeks back. Yes, it was my first corn feed ever. We don’t seem to have them in Brainerd, for whatever reason, and 2 hours just never seemed worth the drive for some free corn. But boy, it sure was worth walking the two blocks for! (more…)

Lake Shore Driving

Kali, Maya, Allie, MeMy memories of the bus are not very happy. In fact, if I were to be blunt, I’d say they suck.

So really, it’s only fitting that I spent my 21st birthday weekend trekking to and from Chicago, and tallying up a total of 24+ hours on the bus. When factoring in who-knows-how-many hours on the El during daily trips from Evanston to downtown, and a handful of cab rides, there’s really only one cheer to make: Whoo public transit! (That’s Kali, the HP spoiler, Maya, the hippie, Allie, the former roommate and me on the El) (more…)

I’m going to drive myself insane.

I was hoping to have Harry Potter finished by today, but instead, I’m finding myself in a constant state of possible spoiler induced panic.

I’m screening my calls. I’m not checking my voice mail. I’m not going near my text messages. I’ve blocked close friends on my buddy list. I’m not logging into facebook. If everything had gone according to the plan, I would have had my book personally delivered to my underground Icelandic lair by a lonesome Arctic warrior, who would be flown in by a pack of puffins. The only way I could be contacted otherwise would be through Morse code. (more…)

Pop Life

n74600456_30504771_2531.jpgI have to admit right here, right now, my favorite part of summer. It’s not the sunshine, it’s not the cheese curds, and it’s not even the lack of homework. All those are fine, but when it comes right down to it, I cannot get enough of summer blockbusters.

Sure, I love Oscar bait. To your right you’ll see me trying to get the Oscars broadcast in during the first night of my Habitat for Humanity trip last spring. But at the end of the day, I’ve still seen “Footloose” around 15 times. The appeal of the summer flick is simple for me: It’s not preachy, it’s not pretentious, and it’s not supposed to change my life. It’s escapism at it’s best. And judging by this summer’s box office, I’m not the only one who feels this way. (more…)

Left to My Own Devices

The Polar ExpressI’m stuck, guys.

I don’t want to leave you hanging, and I want to make sure the time we spend together each week is well worth your time. Blogging is a privilege, not a right. With great power comes great responsibility. Etc, etc.

The point is, I’m not really sure where to start this week.

I could tell the story about how I was positive my bike was stolen last week. About how when I woke up and walked out my backdoor, my shining red beacon of freedom wasn’t there to greet me. (more…)
