Senior Reflection

It’s hard to believe that 4 years can fly by so quickly.

I feel as though yesterday I was wearing my gold Cobber beanie trying to figure out where all of my classes were and what new and exciting people I would meet that day. And now here I am, studying for the last finals of my college career and trying to pack up my room to move back to Colorado and start a brand new adventure.

Although the last few weeks of my college career have been a whirlwind of activity, I have found myself staring off into space and experiencing nostalgia. So rather than distract myself with my thoughts as I’m studying for my finals, I thought I would share a bit of my experience with all of you fantastic blog readers.

At Concordia, your friends turn into your family. I came to Concordia not knowing anyone other than my admissions counselor, and within 10 minutes of being on campus I had a new friend and roommate, Kari Kalway. Throughout the years I have developed extremely close friendships, some that I can confidently say will last a lifetime.

Some of these people I would even consider the sister that I never had or the brother from another mother. It is truly hard to believe that I may never see some extremely familiar faces again in person, but their memory will continue to live on in my mind and heart. If I could have it my way, I would pack up all of my friends and move them to Colorado with me. (more…)

“Le ciel  bleu sur nous peut s’effondrer et la terre peu bien s’ecrouler peu m’importe si tu m’ai me…” Oh! I’m sorry! I didn’t see you there. I was just practicing for my recital that is coming up on Saturday. I’ve been working on this French piece that was recently recorded by Josh Groban. It’s an absolutely gorgeous song with a beautiful text that means a lot to me. It’s definitely the most beautiful French love song that I have ever heard. Now I just have to make sure that I have it memorized. Anyway, my senior voice recital is this Saturday and I’m getting really excited and very nervous at the same time. I will be singing a total of 10 songs in German, French, Italian, and English. I have been working on this program all year long and even last summer. But the more I really think about it, the more I realize that I have been working toward this moment for about 5 years now. No, it didn’t take me 5 years to learn 10 songs in 4 languages. What I’m saying is that I have been working really hard for the last 5 years (when I started voice lessons) to get to the point that I am at right now. I have realized too, especially in the last few weeks, that everyone sounds a little bit different and has a bit of a different style. I also know that everyone has their own little struggle areas in which they need to work the kinks out. I know that I have worked hard and I can hear the difference in the sound that I produce and the technique that I use. All I can do on Saturday is my absolute best and have fun. This is my “time to shine!” This is the time that I really really get to put into practice all that I have learned. Of course I will continue singing, practicing, and performing for the rest of my life, but there’s just something about a voice recital that is a little extra special. Plus, (more…)

The Countdown Begins

countdown.jpgThe final countdown of my college career has begun. In approximately 20 days I will be leaving the beautiful campus of Concordia College for the last time *tear.*

But this isn’t just any old regular countdown. This isn’t just any normal 20 days. This is a countdown that contains excitement, relief, pressure, a bit of anxiety, and a lot of change. It also is a countdown that counts various sub-countdowns.

Are you confused yet?

Let me further explain. First we have the Temple Band Countdown. In three days we will be playing as part of the entertainment for Relay for Life. In eight days, Temple Band will be introducing a U2Charist which is basically a communion service but with all U2 music. In nine days Temple Band will be playing for the second to last chapel service on campus. (more…)

Finally the sun came out and so did my flip flops. As the sun continued to shine throughout the week, my winter coat and shoes were buried farther and farther into the closet. Because the sun was shining I felt that I was close to the end, and that even though I had quite the load on my plate, I would make it to graduation. Unfortunately I looked at the weather forecast for Sunday and was disappointed to see snow in our future. Well Sunday morning rolled around and I was pleased to see only a dusting of snow on the ground and no frost to scrape off of the window. I headed off to Salem Evangelical Free Church in Fargo, where I intern, with a smile on my face and Starbucks in my car’s cup holder. About 8:45 am rolled around and I went out from the sanctuary to get a drink of water before the service began. My smile was quickly wiped off my cheerful face as I looked out in horror at the giant snowflakes pouring down from the bleak, gray sky. I turned my thoughts and body back to the sanctuary to pick up my guitar and begin the first service. After the second service, the snow was still whipping around in the air with the help of the classic Fargo wind. 2:00pm…still snowing. 7:00pm…Still Snowing. 9:00pm….STILL SNOWING!!! Finally around 10:00pm the snow stopped and a thick blanket of snow covered the Fargo/Moorhead Area. Grrr! This snow storm was about to drive me insane! Although the sparkling white snow was rather pretty, it only made me feel as though it was January and I still had months and months left of school and homework piling up on me. This snow storm was about to drive me insane!Thankfully I awoke to a slight glimmer of sunshine streaming through my window on Monday morning and I realized that the snow would not be around for much longer, which quickly lifted my spirits and gave me hope for the rest of spring. And indeed, by today the snow was almost completely gone save for a few dirty clumps of snow hiding in the shade of a tall pine tree. Come, Spring, Come (and bring my sanity back please)!

Fun at David’s

tiaras.jpgthe-ensemble.jpgCobbers are many things. First of all we are students. And then some of us are athletes, some are musicians. Some Cobbers are scientists and some Cobbers are shrewd businessmen. Cobbers are interns and leaders. Some Cobbers are boyfriends, some Cobbers are girlfriends, and some Cobbers (wink, wink) are fiances. This Cobber is many things including a fiancé to the most amazing man in the world (I may have a biased opinion). Lately I have been consumed with homework, projects, practicing, my internship, classes, my worship band, and trying to catch a few zzzzs in the midst of everything. Unfortunately what has suffered in all my Cobber busyness are my wedding plans, which only slightly scares me considering I’m getting married in about 120 some days. But this weekend I finally was able to take some time away from my homework and take care of a few wedding things. After church on Sunday, me and one of my bridesmaids, Katie Hedberg, headed on over to David’s Bridal to order her dress, find some shoes, and maybe even some jewelry. After the laughter subsided over Katie putting on an awful color dress for fitting purposes, she put on the right color and we headed over to the shoe section to pick out some bridesmaid shoes. Shoe after shoe went on and off of our feet it was almost ridiculous. Finally she helped me decide on the final shoe choice and color. Well, you can’t really have a dress and shoes without jewelry, so that became our next stop. Finding jewelry to match the bridesmaids dresses didn’t take long as it pretty much popped out at us. Maybe we were a bit too hasty, but the outfit looked great, so why not? As we were making a decision on jewelry, we just happened to be standing right by the tiaras - big and small, beautiful tiaras just begging to be worn. Well, both Katie and I decided that we would surrender to their plea and put on the biggest ones we could find. Perfect for a photo opportunity! After purchasing the dress, shoes, and jewelry we headed off for lunch at Schlotzky’s Deli. All in all, it was a really great day with lots of laughter – just what I needed to give me a break from homework and feel more accomplished with my plans for the big day.
